If you’re interested in flying UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), there are some rules you should consider to avoid any run-ins with the law or anyone else. Here are some of the basics to keep your flying fun and problem-free.
UAVs, or drones, are plentiful, can fly pretty far, and are great for hobbyists to pick up and get started with. Matt at How-To Geek explains that you still have to follow the Federal Aviation Administration’s rules when you fly, though. To keep yourself out of trouble, here are some simple rules Matt recommends:
- Don’t fly beyond your line of sight (even if there is a camera) or when it’s dark, and keep your altitude lower than 400 ft.
- Avoid flying in highly populated areas, and never fly near airports, schools, churches, stadiums, any kind of utilities like power stations and water treatment facilities, or government buildings like prisons and detention facilities.
Follow these guidelines and your drone flying shouldn’t cause you any trouble. As drones become more popular, the laws regarding their use might change, so stay informed by checking in with the FAA regularly. Flying drones can be a lot of fun, but it’s still important to take them seriously. If you’re looking to get into drones, we can tell you which ones are the best.
