Somebody Finally Built a Star Trek Communicator

Sci-fi fans have eagerly awaited the moment when Star Trek technologies become a reality. Thanks to On Beep, at least one of them has. Sort of.
It may not be as robust as Trek version, but the $99 Onyx allows users to communicate with up to 15 friends with a simple tap of the disc-shaped device.
Onyx connects via Bluetooth to Android and iOS devices, which use a companion app to relay messages to your away team. Think of it as a smart walkie-talkie, using data rather than 1-to-1 radios to get the message across
The design team engineered Onyx to be lightweight and gentle fabrics, so it should be good to clip on any item of your wardrobe. They also say they built it with audio quality in mind, which explains why the disk is so big. The app can not only send messages but also track members of your Onyx team are, so no redshirt is left behind.
Pre-orders have just begun; the device debuts later in the year. So maybe 2015 is the year that obnoxious people at parties will be tapping your Onyx and yelling, "Beam me up, Scotty!" Or maybe we should keep holding out for a phaser.
