Unearthed in the wake of the Germanwings air crash is this now-eerie training video, which demonstrates how to use the numeric keypad to lock and unlock the doors of the cockpit.
As the pieces of the story come together, it appears that Germanwings co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the other pilot out of the cockpit before intentionally crashing the jet, killing all 144 passengers and six crewmembers. As the demo shows, a pilot can put in a code for entry if they get locked out. But if it's miskeyed, the system can keep the person locked out on the other side of the door.
There is an emergency code that can override the door if a pilot gets locked out, but it's not known yet whether the pilot in this case tried to use it.
