Yesterday, a weather phenomenon that we rarely get to see in the US completely engulfed Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, Jordan. A dust storm rolled across the airport, reducing the visibility to nearly zero.
Dust storms are typically caused by a gust front that lifts sand and dirt particles into the air. The process starts with a phenomenon called "saltation", and eventually, the particles become suspended in the air. The entire process is really incredible, both in the visuals it creates, as well as its ability to shut down an airport.
